Wilton Park Adoptable Road Stabilisation

A design and build adoptable road stabilisation package at Wilton Park, Beaconsfield, using site-won material to form the capping and subbase replacement layers for a CBM pavement foundation.

Wilton Park, Beaconsfield 2 days

Project Overview

Project Overview

At Wilton Park, Beaconsfield, approximately 1,000m2 of adoptable road was considered for stabilisation of the capping and subbase layers. Furlong GS worked closely with the client team and Local Authority on a stabilised CBM pavement foundation construction.

Design Approach

Following analysis of the host site-won material and laboratory testing, Furlong GS designed the capping and subbase stabilised layers. The design was prepared in accordance with MCHW Series 600, CD 225 design for new foundation pavements and CC 201 pavement foundation construction requirements.

Equipment Selection

Agile and safely operated machinery was selected because of the site level changes and working conditions. The project used a tractor-mounted WS250 Wirtgen mixer and a tractor-mounted Streumaster SW 3 AC binder spreader.

Testing and Validation

The ITP included pre-works plasticity, moisture, MCV, water-soluble sulphate, TPS and pH testing, in-situ density and air voids checks, EV2 plate load testing, DCP correlation or FWD confirmation, and laboratory UCS / ITSM mix design checks. Testing was undertaken by Furlong GS in-house technicians.

Client Benefit

The MCHW CC201-led design enabled the client to utilise site-won material to create the capping and subbase replacement layer, saving time and money while reducing vehicle movements and imported material demand.

The Challenge

  • Approximately 1,000m2 of adoptable road required stabilisation of the capping and subbase layers.
  • The design needed to make practical use of host site-won material after laboratory analysis and testing.
  • The pavement foundation had to align with client team requirements and Local Authority expectations for adoptable road construction.

The Solution

  • Provided a design and build package for the road capping and subbase replacement layers.
  • Designed the stabilised layers following analysis of the host site-won material and supporting laboratory testing.
  • Developed the pavement foundation in accordance with MCHW Series 600, CD 225 and CC 201 requirements.
  • Used agile tractor-mounted equipment, including a WS250 Wirtgen mixer and Streumaster SW 3 AC binder spreader, to suit level changes and site working conditions.

The Outcome

  • Delivered 1,000m2 of stabilised adoptable road foundation in a 2 day programme.
  • Enabled reuse of site-won material to create the capping and subbase replacement layers.
  • Supported CBM pavement foundation construction with Furlong GS in-house testing and validation.
  • The case study benefits summary records 50% cost saving, 45% programme reduction and 80% vehicle movement reduction.
