This project involved bulk fill modification and subbase stabilisation to improve the engineering performance of site materials and enable their reuse within a commercial development scheme.

Engineering Approach

The works focused on reducing moisture content in unsuitable materials and stabilising soils using hydraulic binders, transforming them into a durable and load-bearing construction layer.

Why It Mattered

By improving existing materials rather than replacing them, the project achieved a more efficient, economical and sustainable earthworks solution while ensuring long-term performance.

The Challenge

  • Cut and Fill Earthworks – 20,000m3
  • Bulk Fill Treatment of placed material to achieve >5.0% CBR (50Mpa) – 15,000m3
  • Capping and Subbase Replacement Stabilisation to achieve >30% CBR (150Mpa) – 22,000m2

The Solution

  • Moisture conditioning of unsuitable materials to reduce water content and enable reuse as engineered fill.
  • Mixing in hydraulic binders to alter soil properties and improve strength and durability.
  • Controlled stabilisation process to produce a consistent, long-term structural layer suitable for construction loading.

The Outcome

  • Reuse of site-won materials instead of disposal.
  • Improved strength and load-bearing capacity of ground.
  • Enhanced durability of treated layers for long-term performance.
