Project Overview

This residential development project required the construction of adoptable roads using a capping replacement layer approach. The works included treatment of placed bulk fill material and stabilisation of a 300mm capping layer to deliver the necessary pavement foundation performance.

Engineering Approach

The stabilisation works were designed in accordance with MCHW Series 600, CD 225 and CC 201. The approach combined bulk fill improvement with bound capping stabilisation to achieve the required CBR values and create a compliant road foundation system.

Testing and Validation

Performance was verified through a formal ITP and validation regime including plasticity, moisture, MCV, WVS, sulphate, TPS/pH, density and air voids testing, EV2 plate load testing, DCP or FWD correlation, and laboratory UCS / ITSM mix design checks.

Why It Mattered

By stabilising the road foundation in situ, the project achieved a practical and efficient solution for adoptable infrastructure, reducing the need for imported materials while ensuring compliance, durability and long-term trafficking resistance.

The Challenge

  • Bulk Fill Treatment of placed material to achieve >5.0% CBR (50Mpa) – 1,000m3
  • Capping Layer 300mm Stabilisation to achieve >30% CBR (150Mpa) – 5,000m2
  • Delivery of a compliant pavement foundation design in accordance with MCHW Series 600, CD 225 and CC 201 requirements

The Solution

  • Treatment of placed bulk fill material to improve strength characteristics and achieve the required CBR performance.
  • Stabilisation of a 300mm capping layer to create a bound pavement foundation suitable for adoptable roads.
  • Implementation of a structured testing and validation plan including density, air voids, EV2 plate load and laboratory mix design checks.

The Outcome

  • Achieved required bearing capacity for both bulk fill and bound capping layers.
  • Delivered a pavement foundation aligned with adoptable roads design and construction standards.
  • Validated in situ performance through testing in accordance with CC 201 and CD 225.
  • Provided a durable and traffic-resistant road foundation within a short construction programme.
