Project Overview

This project involved the remediation of contaminated made ground at a commercial development site in East London, addressing risks associated with heavy metals and PAHs in shallow soils.

Engineering Approach

A risk-led remediation strategy was implemented, focusing on the upper 2 metres of soil. Cement stabilisation was used to encapsulate contaminants and improve the engineering properties of the ground.

Why It Mattered

By targeting only the contaminated strata and applying in-situ stabilisation, the project reduced costs, minimised material disposal and ensured long-term environmental protection.

The Challenge

  • Demolition and Foundations Removal – By MC
  • Excavate min 2.0m. Turnover, Rake and Replace for Treatment – 5,000m3
  • Cement Stabilisation to achieve >15.0% CBR encapsulation (100Mpa) – 5,000m3
  • Subbase Replacement Stabilisation to achieve >30% CBR (150Mpa) – 4,500m2

The Solution

  • Undertook a Tier 1 human health risk assessment based on soil chemical analysis and regulatory criteria.
  • Identified contamination (heavy metals and PAHs) concentrated within the upper 2 metres of made ground.
  • Applied targeted excavation and treatment strategy focused on shallow soils to optimise cost and effectiveness.
  • Encapsulated contaminated soils using cement stabilisation to prevent leaching and migration.

The Outcome

  • Mitigated risks to human health from contaminated soils.
  • Prevented contaminant migration into underlying strata.
  • Delivered a cost-effective remediation strategy focused on high-risk zones.
  • Created a stable and compliant platform for further development.
